The Convo That Began my Author Career

Funny story: In college I started out as an English major, but the university I attended “strongly recommended” taking creative writing, and I honestly thought that I had no story ideas…

I wrote my first book when my husband was a baby attorney with a tiny paycheck and hefty student loans.. We were feeling the pinch, and driving together when my husband asked me what I was thinking about. I gave him my train of thought of seeing this fancy car pass us, and then on to Europe, and a singer, and a few others things and he said, “Your imagination is wild, you should write some of that down…just for fun.”

So I did. And the “fun” got longer and longer and longer and when I was nearing 100 pages (long before I knew writers go by word count rather than page count) and I knew I had more story to tell, I realized I was going to write an entire novel.

That book was awful. Just TERRIBLE. But it showed me that I could put together.a story. The next one I wrote with more purpose, and it became my first published book.

I will forever by grateful for that random date-night drive to Taco Bell and the many, many stories I’ve written as a result.
